Public Open Day, Buried Heritage Dig, Worcester Walk

Saturday 16th October, 2021
10:30-15:00

After completing the Mile End Enclosure dig this September, the Buried Heritage team are now carrying out further archaeological dig activity for two weekends in October (8th-11th and 15th-18th), shifting a few miles down the road to woodlands near Worcester Walk to survey, excavate and generally investigate the widespread remains of a World War 2 camp about which little is known.  We know there are hut bases, paths, the base of a possible watchtower and even the remains of an open air cinema perhaps.

A Public Open Day is taking place on Sat 16th October 2021 when the Buried Heritage team, led by Worcestershire Archive & Archaeology Service (WAAS),  will be providing guided tours at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.00pm, 2.00pm & 3.00pm.  You are welcome to come along!

Location: in woodland, alongside where Woodville Avenue meets Worcester Walk. Also near Worcester Walk playground. Please see OS map below. Location of dig indicated with red dot.

Parking: Please park considerately in the lanes next to the dig location woodland.

Background to this dig:

The Buried Heritage team say:

“It’ll be a bit of a change from previous sites but will provide new skills and should stimulate some interesting research as well as uncovering and recording this historic wartime site.  We may even recover a few dateable wartime artefacts. We believe the camp was used for Italian prisoners of war although some of the structures probably housed guards rather than prisoners.  Surprisingly no overall plan or map survives to help understand and preserve the remains so putting that plan together will be one of our main objectives. What we uncover will mean that people will be able to better appreciate this important aspect of the Forest’s more recent history and once again we’ll have local schools to visit and an Open Day (on Sat 16th).

We’re hoping that some people from the local area may even be able to provide memories via older residents and relatives who may well remember the camp or even be descended from those garrisoned/imprisoned there.”
