Coleford Area Walking Festival – Staunton Geology Walk

Saturday 4th September, 2021
10:00-13:00

Taking place as part of the Coleford Area Walking Festival, this free guided walk explores the geology of the Staunton area.

Led by local geologist Dave Green of the Foresters’ Forest Geology of the Forest project, the walk will explore the valley eroded in easterly dipping Lower Limestone Shales and Tintern Sandstone between resistant Carboniferous limestone (old quarries) and Quartz conglomerate (exposed on the ridge as the Buckstone). With great views west towards Monmouth and south down the Wye Valley.

A 2km walk with one climb and no stiles.

Walkers will be able to park behind the village hall in Staunton.

Possible 2.5km extension to Suckstone and Near Hearkening Rock (both just outside the Forest boundary)
